Think London - and one image that comes up is a red bus trundling beside an avenue of planes: the trees that represent all that is enduring, stable and practical in our great capital.
And no wonder, for the London Plane has many virtues: providing a shady cover in summer; leathery leaves resistant to air pollution; the ability to thrive in compressed soil. All in all, the ideal urban tree.
But not of any great value for its timber, which may have helped so many to survive since the 18th century - when the first plantings were made in Berkeley Square.
Coming to traditional wooden floors, pine and oak have retained their popularity to the present day.

4 ways to ensure your wooden floors never lose their shine
We all know that hardwood floors look naturally beautiful. There's something so timeless about solid wood: it'll slot perfectly into almost any design. The only downside, of course, is that over time solid timber can begin to look worn. So, how can you go about keeping a perfect shine on your solid wood floor?
Use preventative measures
As with almost anything, it's much better to use a prevention than a cure. Fortunately, there are a number of ways in which to stop any wear and tear before it starts. For instance, if you set up rugs or mats by the entrance, you won't tread any dirt or debris into the finish. This can make the world of difference over the long-term, especially if you've got a big family and a lot of feet going over the floor. The key is to make sure you give the mat or rug a wash once every now and then, too.
Another preventative measure is to ensure that no shoes are allowed in the house. Again, they might not do too much damage one at a time, but over months and years shoes can really remove shine from solid wood.
Use natural cleaners
While it can be tempting to use the chemically balanced cleaners you see on TV, maintaining the shine in your floor is often easier if you stick to more natural remedies. A good option for a natural cleaner is to combine white vinegar and vegetable oil (use equal parts) in a spray bottle - this will keep the floor seriously shiny as long as you carry out a fairly regular clean.

Keep an eye on wax build-up
If you give your floor a wax once a year or so (which isn't a bad idea at all) it's important to make sure you're not using too much. If you are, it could be a good idea to use any off-the-shelf wax remover to clear it off. Remember, waxing is a once-or-twice-a-year job: if you overdo it, you can often end up damaging or wearing the finish, rather than helping it.
